Even though often described as newbies, The Boxer Rebellion have been around on the indie-scene for good 10 years now. In 2007 they joined Editors as support act on their European tour and in 2010 they made the soundtrack for the movie ‘Going The Distance’, which resulted in making them more famous in the USA than in hometown London.

Fast forward to 2011. They released their third album ‘The Cold Still’. From the very first notes of ‘No Harm’ you can tell something wonderful is about to happen the next 40 odd minutes. ‘Locked in the basement’ and ‘Caught by the light are proof that singer Nathan Nicholson’s voice – like a proper wine – matures nicely with age.

But those of you who preferred the war of drums and electric guitars on their debut album ‘Exits’, don’t despair just yet. ‘Step out of the car’, ‘Organ Song’ and ‘The Runner’ are recipes to get even the most 2-left-footed person going crazy on the dance floor.

The band clearly digged deep for this album. Which also reflects lyrically in ‘Memo’ and ‘Cause for Alarm. The Boxer Rebellion grew up without anyone noticing, but thankfully they managed to do so without losing their own identity. ‘Doubt’ writes a fireworks-worthy finale to – in my humble opinion – on of the albums of the year. Hopefully ‘The Cold Still’ will put them on the musical map for once and for all and give them the success they so very much deserve.

The Boxer Rebellion is reeds 10 jaar hard en onverwoestbaar aan het timmeren aan de weg naar succes. Hoewel ze nog vaak als nieuwkomers beschouwd worden stonden ze al in 2007 in het voorprogramma van Editors tijdens hun Europese tournee en hebben ze de soundtrack van de film ‘Going The Distance’ op hun naam staan, wat er voor zorgde dat ze bekender zijn in de States dan in hun thuisbasis Londen.

Anno 2011 hebben ze hun derde plaat, ‘The Cold Still’ uit. Al van bij de intro van het ingetogen ‘No Harm’ voel je dat er iets moois te gebeuren staat de komende 39’40’’. ‘Locked in the basement’ en ‘Caught by the light’ zijn het bewijs dat zanger Nathan Nicholson’s stem zoals het een goede wijn betaamt alleen maar beter wordt met de jaren.

Wie vooral genoot van het drum- en gitaargeweld van hun debuutplaat ‘Exits’ hoeft echter niet te wanhopen. Nummers als ‘Step out of the car’, ‘Organ Song’ en ‘The Runner’ zijn instant dansbaar en zullen ongetwijfeld hun livereputatie alleen maar ten goede komen.

De band heeft duidelijk alles uit de kast gehaald. Dat wordt ook duideiljk in de lyrics van ‘Memo’ en ‘Cause for Alarm’. Het lijkt wel alsof The Boxer Rebellion volwassen geworden is zonder dat iemand het gmerkt heeft. Maar gelukkig zijn ze daar in geslaagd zonder hun eigen identiteit te verliezen. Met ‘Doubt’ brengen ze wat voor mij persoonlijk een van de albums van het jaar is tot een grandioze finale. Hopelijk zorgt ‘The Cold Still’ eindelijk voor die zuurverdiende internationale doorbraak.
