After two EPs, Zone Démersale (consisting of producer Michele Ferretti {Nubilum} and sound wizard Pietro Riparbelli {20 Buck Spin}), releases its first full length album (as a cassette) on YerevanTapes. The album contains seven compositions, which are numbered from 1 to 7. We listened to the material and came to the conclusion that Figura is very worthwhile and deserves your attention.

Zdfigura 1 (7:08) begins with gentle electronics, soft creaks and a groaning voice, interrupted by sporadic metal-like sounds in the background. The atmosphere is relaxed and ambient. This is experimental music that targets the head, not the stomach. Zdfigura2 (8:23) continues in the same unobtrusive way with fragile repetitive percussion and ethereal electro tones as white lights in an orbit around the earth. Music for abstract paintings, minimalist and brittle. ZDfigura3 (4:20) hardly gets an audible drone base on which fragile patches of sound are built. Sometimes they sound like a tiny church organ, then again as squeaky birds with quiet noise halfway and a high tone as a dissolving rainbow. ZDfigura4 (6:35) begins with fragile noises, soft percussion and the sound of birds and a barking dog in the background, atmospheric, minimalist and simple. Halfway monotonous drones are added, but they hardly grow in volume and sound like a small airplane that is warming up. The dog watches and barks, a lone bird is launched in the large empty space... and didn’t we even hear some real music in the final seconds?

With Zdfigura 5 (5:05), we are about half the tape. Music we have not heard yet. Zone Démersale stays on the field of pure industrial sounds without the need to transform the living room into a flame and heat-spitting steel plant. The composition shuffles to the tone of softly rustling and then gurgling drones: a pond in the morning, just before the rising of the sun, with croaking frogs and graceful swans rising. And then the first sunbeam between the green of the trees and the musical painting is complete. Zdfigura6 (7:07) differs little from the rest: soft drones, barely perceptible percussion, small noises - in this case as disturbed electrical circuits – and nervous guitars in the distant background, decorated with flapping electronics from left to right and vice versa: an illusion of passing trains or steel plants in full swing, and oh yeah, the dog again... and then in the sixth minute something metallic comes closer, just for a moment, and then only emptiness and some rustling noise. It is a relief that industrial sometimes may be this and nothing more.

Zdfigura 7 (07:05) roars like the sea, with waves rolling in from afar, or is it the sound of steel plates being stacked? The short high electro tones do not suggest the presence of cranes, maybe it is the sound of overwrought pressure valves, or passing photons through empty space? Anyway, the pattern is minimalist and austere, without any ambition to stack the decibels. Zone Démersale is the supplier of controlled and emotionless industrial sounds and the duo does not make the mistake of trying to sound like anyone else in the genre. Music in the classic sense of the word does not come to mind here, but fans of this genre, will not regret their purchase.

Na twee ep’s, brengt Zone Démersale, bestaande uit producer Michele Ferretti (Nubilum) en geluidstovenaar Pietro Riparbelli (20 Bucks Spin), z’n eerste full album uit (als cassette) op Yerevan Tapes. Er is sprake van 7 composities, die in de promokit niet meer dan een nummer van 1 tot 7 hebben gekregen. We proberen u toch wegwijs te maken.

Zdfigura1 (7:08) begint met voorzichtige elektronische, kraakjes en een zuchtende stem, onderbroken door sporadisch metaalachtige uithalen in de achtergrond en zacht schurende elektronica. De sfeer is ontspannen en ambient en wordt in de tweede helft nauwelijks bedreigd door korte en snelle flitsen van wat scherper geluid. Dit is experimentele muziek die mikt op het hoofd, niet op de buik. Zdfigura2 (8:23) druppelt op dezelfde haast onopvallende manier uit de speakers met breekbare repetitieve percussie en ijle elektrotonen als witte lichten in een baan om de aarde. Muziek voor een abstract schilderij, minimalistisch en broos. ZDfigura3 (4:20) krijgt een nauwelijks hoorbare drone als basis, waarop fragiele klanktapijtjes worden gebouwd. Soms klinken ze als een minuscuul kerkorgeltje, dan weer als piepende vogeltjes en regelmatig passeert wat stille ruis met halfweg een hoge toon als een zachtjes oplossende regenboog. ZDfigura4 (6:35) begint met stille ruis en voorzichtige percussie waarop een dierentuin van (vogel-)geluiden wordt gebouwd met op de achtergrond een blaffend hondje, atmosferisch, minimalistisch en eenvoudig. Halfweg klinken de monotone drones iets nadrukkelijker, maar ze nemen nauwelijks in kracht toe, en ze krijgen uiteindelijk een metaalachtige klank als van een klein vliegtuig dat zich opwarmt op de startbaan. Het hondje kijkt toe en blaft, een eenzame vogel waagt zich in de gigantische lege ruimte… en horen we op het einde niet iets wat nog een beetje op muziek lijkt?...

Met Zdfigura5 (5:05) zijn we over de helft. Muziek hebben we nog niet gehoord. Zone Démersale houdt zich op het terrein van de pure industrial zonder de behoefte om de huiskamer tot een vuur en hitte spuwende staalfabriek om te toveren. Ook compositie 5 zet rustig in en schuifelt op de toon van zachtjes ruisende en dan murmelende drones voorbij: een waterpartij in de ochtend, net voor het opkomen van de zon, met kwakende kikkers en sierlijk opstijgende zwanen. En dan de eerste zonnestraal tussen het groen van de bomen en het muzikale schilderij is klaar. Zdfigura6 (7:07) onderscheidt zich nauwelijks van de rest: zachte drones, nauwelijks waarneembare percussie, wat kleine geluidjes – in dit geval als van elektrische circuits die worden gestoord – nerveuze gitaren in de verre achtergrond, klapwiekende elektronica van links naar rechts en omgekeerd: een illusie van passerende treinen of staalfabrieken in volle gang op de heel verre achtergrond, en oh ja, het hondje… en dan toch in de zesde minuut iets metaalachtigs dat dichterbij komt, voor even, en dan weer de leegte en wat ruisend omgevingsgeluid. Een hele opluchting dat industrial ook alleen maar dit kan en hoeft te zijn.

Zdfigura7 (7:05) ruist als de zee, met van ver aanrollende golven, of zijn het staalplaten die worden gestapeld? De korte hoge elektrotonen suggereren beslist niet de aanwezigheid van kraanvogels, misschien eerder de tensie van overspannen drukventielen of gaat het om passerende fotonen in een voor de rest lege ruimte? Het patroon is in elk geval minimalistisch en sober, zonder enige ambitie om de decibels op te tassen. Zone Démersale is de leverancier van beheerste en onderkoelde industrial en het duo maakt niet de fout om te willen klinken zoals alle anderen in het genre. Muziek in de klassieke zin van het woord komt er niet aan te pas, maar wie van dit genre houdt, die zal zich de aanschaf niet betreuren.
