The concert of Aidan Baker (Nadja, Caudal, Adoran) and Eric Quach (Thisquietarmy, Parallel Lines, Mains de Givre) on May 2, 2014, at NK in Berlin NeuKölnn, is now out on CD on ConSouling Sounds. As experimental guitarists who worked together before, they combine their knowledge and experience to explore new territory, for which they rely on three drummers: Felize Salazar (Caudal, Muerte en Pereira), with whom Baker made the album Ascension, Jérémie Mortier (Alice in the Cities, Lady Shot from a Tree) and Dave Dunnett (Man Meets Bear).

On the album The Hypnodrone Ensemble, you hear atmospheric guitar drones and polyrhythmic drums, which flood the room in one long session of about 45 minutes. The band sounds alternately soft and hard, with minimalist soundscapes and bumpy guitars, and then solid guitar riffs, drones and rattling drums. Sometimes it sounds like post-rock, ambient, fragile and dreamy, but ultimately it goes crescendo with smashing guitars and demonic drums at the speed of pure rock. There is no lack of variety, and the constant tempo shifts ensure that you stay alert, with noise and distortion as additional accents if needed.

This jam session is improvised, yet it contains structure, making it sound completely subtle and balanced, and it avoids the impression that this will end in chaos, because together these gentlemen have enough professionalism and creativity to grant the listener a unique and exciting musical experience.

Van het concert dat Aidan Baker (Nadja, Caudal, Adoran) en Eric Quach (Thisquietarmy, Parallel Lines, Mains de Givre) op 2 mei 2014 in NK in Berlijn NeuKölnn ten gehore brachten, is nu een cd verschenen op ConSouling Sounds. Beide experimentele gitaristen, die ook eerder samenwerkten, bundelden er hun vakkennis en ervaring om nieuw territorium te verkennen, waarvoor ze een beroep doen op drie drummers, m.n. Felize Salazar (Caudal, Muerte en Pereira), met wie Baker het album Ascension maakte, Jérémie Mortier (Alice in the Cities, Lady Shot from a Tree) en Dave Dunnett (Man Meets Bear).

Op het album The Hypnodrone Ensemble hoor je bijgevolg atmosferische gitaardrones en polyritmische drums, die als eb en vloed de huiskamer overspoelen in één lange sessie van zo’n 45 minuten. Het gezelschap kiest afwisselend voor zacht en hard, met minimalistische soundscapes en rustig voort hobbelende gitaren en dan weer stevige giraarriffs, drones en ratelende drums. Soms klinkt het als post-rock, vervolgens ambient, fragiel en dromerig, maar uiteindelijk gaat het opnieuw crescendo met knallende gitaren en duivels drumwerk op het tempo van pure rock. Aan afwisseling geen gebrek dus, en de voortdurend tempoverschuivingen zorgen ervoor dat je bij de les blijft, desgevallend met noise en distortie als extra accenten.

Deze jamsessie is geïmproviseerd, maar tegelijk bevat ze wel degelijk structuur, waardoor het geheel fijnzinnig en evenwichtig klinkt, waardoor je als luisteraar nooit de indruk krijgt dat dit in chaos zal eindigen, want met z’n vijven hebben deze heren voldoende professionalisme en creativiteit in huis om van een dergelijke sessie een unieke en spannende muzikale ervaring te maken.
