Fred Abong is definitely back in business with a new Ep-“Pulsing”. A title which is reflective of the musical impact of this tour de force, that combines psychedelic-art house acoustics woven into six tracks of perfected grace. After a spell in the wilderness, Abong returned last year with a Ph.D and a new Ep-“Homeless”. Now in 2019, the former member of Throwing Muses and Belly resurrects his demons once more and channels them directly into the airwaves.
“..it was inspired by life and life events. You can fill in the blanks here to your satisfaction – relationships, loss, death, ecstasy, identity, longing, transformation, frustration, desire, love, hate, etc.,”-Fred Abong.
On March the-8th this year, Fred unleashes this beast to the world via Bandcamp, as a double-header however he also begins a tour of twenty-one dates across the United Kingdom along with fellow troubadour and former Throwing Muses bandmate- Kirsten Hersh.
From the outset the Ep slides out of the speakers as the drones of “Footprints” transcend the quiet backing. The lead single and perhaps a personal favorite-“Firefly” injects the air with Abongs perfected toxicity. An air of those early alternative bands are stricken within each guitar stroke. To dig deeper and perhaps explain the sound, “Pulsing” has a quality of punk-folk, what a meeting between Townes Van Zandt and perhaps Black Francis would achieve-with a sprinkle of the Californian sun. The tracks are short on time but intense with emotion, only the aforementioned “Firefly” running over the three-minute mark. It is indeed a solid release, accessible and the perfect soundtrack to those chill-out moments.
