DER BLUTHARSCH AND THE INFINITE CHURCH OF THE LEADING HAND

Wir kapitulieren niemals (in short WKN) is the name of the label of the Austrian cult band Der Blutharsh. Founder Albin Julius couldn’t have found a better name for his label, not only it was a fight against lies, the band already is active for 18 years. The first decade was dominated by a neofolk sound, often enriched with an industrial touch, but in recent years Der Blutharsh is more psychedelic rock, although it still sounds black. Since 2011 the band is known as Der Blutharsch And The Infinite Church Of The Leading Hand. Joyride is already the ninth album under the new name. As always, Albin Julius, Jörg B. and Marthynna are assisted by a whole host of guest musicians, this time for example you’ll hear Matt Howden of Sieben or Alan Trench of Orchis.

The cover reminds us of an obscure B-movie, and so does the music, although the dark atmosphere is indebted to the Krautock of Can or Faust, yes…so intriguing, yes they are! Not only the name of the label is ideally chosen, also the title of the album. The trio invites you for a heavenly ride through dark catacombs where the narrative voice of Marthynna is your only hope or companion. It's a trip that normally is offered by David Lynch

It starts with subtle dark pop, but it's only a start for what is to come. Joyride is not a monotonous ride, as with each track the album progresses, it is as if every song is complemented with an extra (often obscure) dimension. Every song seems to be darker and more complex, if angstpop exists, then you definitely can hear it on Joyride. Heavenly!

Wir kapitulieren niemals (kortom WKN), zo heet het platenlabel van de Oostenrijkse cultband Der Blutharsh. Een betere titel kon oprichter Albin Julius voor zijn label niet bedenken, het werd niet alleen een gevecht tegen leugens, de band is ondertussen ook al 18 jaar bezig. Het eerste decennia werd gedomineerd door een neofolkgeluid, vaak met een induskantje, maar de laatste jaren staat Der Blutharsh voor psychedelische rock, alhoewel het nog steeds gitzwart klinkt. Sinds 2011 heet de band dan ook Der Blutharsch And The Infinite Church Of The Leading Hand. Joyride is ondertussen al het negende album onder de nieuwe naam. Zoals steeds worden Albin Julius, Jörg B. en Marthynna bijgestaan door een hele resem gastmuzikanten, deze keer is dat bijv. Matt Howden van Sieben of Alan Trench van Orchis.

De hoes doet wat denken aan een obscure B-film, en zo klinkt de muziek ook, ofschoon de donkere sfeer schatplichtig is aan de Krautock van pakweg Can of Faust, inderdaad zo intrigerend dus!

Niet alleen de naam van het label is ideaal gekozen, ook de titel van het album. Het drietal nodigt je immers uit voor en hemelse rit doorheen donkere catacomben waar de vertelstem van Marthynna je enige hoop of gezel is. Het is een trip die je normaal alleen maar door David Lynch aangeboden krijgt. Het begint met subtiele donkere pop, maar het is een aanloop voor wat komen moet. Joyride is geen monotone rit, naarmate de plaat vordert lijkt het wel alsof er aan ieder nummer een extra (vaak meer duistere) dimensie wordt toegevoegd. Ieder nummer lijkt donkerder en complexer te worden, als angstpop toch zou bestaan, dan hoor je die beslist op Joyride. Hemels!
