James Warren is a singer-songwriter from Minnesota, USA. His music is an eclectic blend of Americana and alt-country and his material consists of original compositions and covers. The St. Cloud Times newspaper nominated him for three years in a row as the best original artist in Minnesota and with this ep Honest Man, containing six tracks, he introduces himself to us.

In Gone Mad, the pace is relatively fast. Europeans will immediately recognize the country influence, but above all this a typical American fast-paced rock song with guitars, hasty percussion and perfectly fitting vocals, somewhere between John Hiatt and Bruce Springsteen. Lonely is much more singer-songwriter stuff, with Nashville-like guitars, a lone cowboy at the microphone, attractive background vocals in the chorus and again typical Americana-guitars for the instrumental passage, while Gravel is initially satisfied with an acoustic guitar, before evolving into a full-blooded country and western ballad, including wailing guitars.

World War continues at the same pace, with emphatic vocals and loud guitars, paused halfway for a quieter passage and then again emphatic percussion and guitars. Americana of the purest sort (at least for European ears). Wrecking Me is singer-songwriter material again, sensitive and a tad romantic with sliding guitars in the background, a brittle violin and very beautiful vocals. Honest Man is the most fragile track on the ep. James Warren's beautiful voice is very much in the foreground, with gentle guitar accompaniment and a nostalgic harmonica in the background. Stunning.

James Warren’s music might sound a little too country and western for European ears, but the potential is clearly there, with regard to the voice and particularly in terms of the compositional quality of his songs.

James Warren is een singer-songwriter uit Minnesota, USA. Zijn muziek is een eclectische blend van Americana en alt-country en zijn materiaal bestaat uit eigen composities en covers. De krant St. Cloud Times nomineerde hem drie jaar op rij als de beste originele artiest in Minnesota en met deze ep Honest Man, die zes tracks bevat, stelt hij zich graag aan ons voor.

In Gone Mad kiest James Warren voor een vrij hoog tempo. Europeanen herkennen meteen de country-invloed, maar het is vooral een typische Amerikaanse rocksong met jachtige gitaren, goed klinkende percussie en perfect aansluitende vocalen, ergens tussen Johan Hiatt en Bruce Springsteen. Lonely is veel meer singer-songwritermateriaal, met Nashvilleachtige gitaren, een eenzame cowboy voor de microfoon, een aantrekkelijk achtergrondkoortje in het refrein en typische Americana-gitaren voor de instrumentale tussenpassage, terwijl Gravel zich aanvankelijk tevreden stelt met een akoestische gitaar alvorens uit te groeien tot een volbloed country & western-ballade, inclusief jankende gitaren.

World War gaat op hetzelfde tempo door, met nadrukkelijke vocalen en luide gitaren, halfweg onderbroken voor een rustigere passage en dan opnieuw nadrukkelijke percussie en gitaren. Americana van het puurste soort (althans voor Europese oren). Wrecking Me is opnieuw singer-songwritermateriaal, gevoelig en een tikkeltje romantisch met glijdende gitaren op de achtergrond, een breekbare viool tussendoor en vooral heel erg mooie vocalen. Honest Man is zondermeer de meest fragiele track op de ep. James Warrens prachtige stem zit helemaal vooraan met rustige gitaarbegeleiding en een nostalgisch mondharmonica op de achtergrond. Bloedmooi.

Misschien klinkt James Warren net iets te country & westernachtig voor Europese oren, maar het potentieel is duidelijk aanwezig, qua stem en vooral wat betreft de compositorische kwaliteit van z’n songs.
