Anyone who loves film will no doubt once come in touch with BFI. The British Film Institute not only publishes the best movie magazine (Sight And Sound), it also supplies forgotten film gems. One of the best items in their immense catalog is BFI Flipside, movies with a naughty side and of course a very high content of cult. Deep End by Jerzy Skolimowski is among them.
His name might be obscure for most of you, he nonetheless wrote the script of Knife In The Water by Polanski and next to Andrzej Wajda, must be considered as one of the most important Polish directors. From the mid 60’s on, Skolimowski worked in various countries. In 1965, he even made a Belgian film (Le Départ with Jean-Pierre Léaud, one of Truffaut's favorite actors). Deep End (original title: Starting Out) is a film that is set in the trendy London of the 60s, although almost the entire film was shot in Munich in the Bavaria studios. Just as in Kes or Les 400 Coups we follow in Deep End the story of a young adolescent, Mike (John Moulder-Brown), who has just started his first job in a bathhouse. From the first moment he is in love with his older, lascivious colleague Susan (Jane Asher). Susan becomes an obsession for him.
Deep End is full of surreal colors and is therefore a visual spectacle. The film begins in an airy way, is even a little naughty, but ends as a hopeless tragedy. Skolimowski, who once lived alongside Jimi Hendrix, knows very well how to use the trendy streets of London, just as the appearance of leading actress Jane Asher. This red-haired vamp is now lesser known, but appeared in the 60’s almost every day in the tabloids as the girlfriend of Paul McCartney. And then there is of course that unforgettable soundtrack. There is the title track of Cat Stevens, but especially the songs of Can are indestructible, although you don’t immediately associate their krautrock with the nightlife in Soho.
A golden tip, just like all the releases on BFI.
