Every country has their scandal movies, but France has more than just one. Just think of Baise-Moi or Les Valseuses (or in fact the complete filmography from Bertrand Blier). L’Eté Meurtrier by Jean Becker from 1983 is another fine example as such. Leading actress Isabelle Adjani already was a star (in the States she played next to Ryan O’Neal in The Driver), but it was especially with this psychological drama that the French diva won her audience. Not in the least because almost all scenes show a nude Adjani. But make no mistake by thinking that L’Eté Meurtrier is softporno as it’s not. At contrary, the movie is a brutal thriller with lots of melodramatic elements, and of course erotic too.


When Eliane, aka Elle (Isabelle Adjani), is coming with her parents to a small village, the young nymph makes all boys’ hearts go crazy. Every man dreams of going out with the beautiful Elaine, especially as rumours say that she’s an easy girl. After having shared her bed with almost the complete village, she becomes unexpected the girl from the nerdy Florimond (Alain Souchon). His two younger brothers absolutely don’t know how he managed this, but his mother doesn’t trust the case, not that she can stop him marrying her. Once Florimond says yes, he notices that his fresh bride has a very disturbed mind. Above all, he doesn’t know that Eliane has murder plans


The film is based upon a novel from Sébastien Japrisot: the novelist who also wrote Un Longue Dimanche De Fiançailles, filmed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet starring Audrey Tatou. The movie was a gigantic hit and won four Césars among one for Best Script and of course Best Actress. And yet, how beautiful and indestructible this classic might be today, no one can deny that Isabelle Adjani is the main attraction. Adjani wasn’t so sure to take this role. For a time it looked like Valerie Kaprisky would do it. It’s bizarre to notice that director Jean Becker waited ten years before he would do something else. Perhaps he simply knew too well that in L’Eté Meurtrier he had an actress who was born to be in front of a camera. Adjani reminds us a bit of the young Brigitte Bardot from the Roger Vadim-films. And yet, how gorgeous she seems, she’s also the perfect lady to perform someone with a sick mind. A point she made two years later in Possession by Andrzej Zulawski much stronger. The choice to give chansonnier Alain Souchon the leading role is strange, even if he’s perfect for this.


L’Eté Meurtrier by Jean Becker is already three decades old, but remains one of the most beautiful ones from the 80’s. That counts for the beauty from Isabelle Adjani too who puts, just like Bardot did in Et Dieu…Créa La Femme, her immortal stamp on French cinema.


The movie is out on Lumière as part of their classic-DVD’s.

Ieder land heeft zo zijn schandaalfilms en in het geval van Frankrijk zijn dat er heel wat: denk maar aan Baise-Moi of Les Valseuses (of eigenlijk de volledige filmografie van Bertrand Blier). L’Eté Meurtrier van Jean Becker uit 1983 is er ook eentje. Hoofdrolspeelster Isabelle Adjani was al een tijdje een ster (zelfs in Amerika waar ze naast Ryan O’Neal in The Driver mocht spelen), maar het was vooral in dit psychologische drama dat ze het publiek om haar vingers wond. Niet het minst omdat ze bijna alle scènes in haar blootje vertolkt. Niet dat L’Eté Meurtrier softporno is. Integendeel, het is een keiharde thriller met heel wat melodramatische elementen, en natuurlijk ook erotiek.


Als Eliane, afgekort Elle (Isabelle Adjani), met haar ouders in een afgelegen boerendorpje komt wonen, slaan meteen alle jongensharten op hol. Iedereen droomt ervan om met de mooie Elaine op stap te gaan, vooral omdat ze naar verluidt gemakkelijk te versieren is. Nadat ze zowat met het hele dorp in de koffer is gedoken wordt zij tot ieders verbazing het liefje van de sullige Florimond (Alain Souchon). Zijn twee jongere broers weten niet waar hij dit aan heeft verdient, maar zijn moeder vertrouwt het zaakje niet, ofschoon zij een huwelijk niet kan verhinderen. Eens Florimond voor het altaar zijn jawoord heeft gegeven, beseft de automekanieker dat zijn kersverse bruid een verwarde geest heeft. Bovendien weet hij niet dat Eliane met moordplannen rondloopt.


Deze film is gebaseerd op een roman van Sébastien Japrisot van wie Jean-Pierre Jeunet later ook nog Un Longue Dimanche De Fiançailles met Audrey Tatou verfilmd. De film werd een gigantisch succes die in thuisland Frankrijk met vier Césars ging lopen waaronder eentje voor het Beste Scenario en natuurlijk Beste Actrice. Hoe mooi en onverwoestbaar deze klassieker vandaag ook nog oogt, toch kan niemand ontkennen dat Isabelle Adjani de hoofdmoot in L’Eté Meurtrier is. Adjani heeft lang over deze rol nagedacht, want eventjes zag het ernaar uit dat Valerie Kaprisky de vertolkster werd. Jean Becker die vreemd genoeg na dit succes bijna tien jaar niets meer van zich liet horen, weet zeer goed dat hij een actrice bij zich heeft die geschapen is voor de camera. Adjani doet je dan ook een beetje denken aan de jonge Brigitte Bardot uit de Vadim-films, maar tegelijkertijd is ze ook de geknipte actrice om een zieke geest te vertolken, wat we haar twee jaar geleden al in het majestueuze Possession van Andrzej Zulawski zagen doen. De keuze van chansonnier Alain Souchon ligt wat minder voor de hand, maar desalniettemin is hij ideaal voor deze rol.


L’Eté Meurtrier van Jean Becker is ondertussen meer dan drie decennia oud, maar blijft toch nog altijd één van de mooiste films uit de jaren 80. En dat geldt ook voor de schoonheid van Isabelle Adjani die met deze film een even grote stempel op de Franse cinema drukte als Bardot in Et Dieu…Créa La Femme.


De film is uitgebracht bij Lumière als één van hun niet te missen klassiekers.
