Of course everyone likes to compare himself with David Bowie, but often such words are nothing more than promo nonsense, but in the case of Rover that is a bit different though. Never heard of him, you say? Well, then you certainly do not live in France, because his debut was awarded with a gold record in 2012 over there. With his second album Timothée Regnier tries to emulate that success, and after listening to the ten tracks that could well be the case.

Everything sounds very radio friendly and the sound is polished, but the songs have an addictive effect. This musician who lived in Lebanon is betting on two horses, but ultimately he wins the race! Half of the album consists of well written songs that can be best compared with what The Thin White Duke did during his Space Oddity days, while other songs are shoegaze pop. Every Frenchman must have some reverence for the genius of his country, and so the title track Let It Glow sounds a lot like the psychedelics of Serge Gainsbourg’s L'Homme A Tete De Chou. And no, no one who complains about that! Indie pop that never goes outside the lines, nevertheless more than decent done!

Iedereen vergelijkt zichzelf natuurlijk maar al te graag met David Bowie en vaak zijn zo’n woorden niet meer dan promolarie, maar in het geval van Rover is dat wel eventjes anders. Nog nooit van gehoord, zeg je? Wel, dan ben je beslist niet van Frankrijk, want daar werd zijn debuut in 2012 met een gouden plaat bekroond. Met zijn tweede cd probeert Timothée Régnier dat succes te evenaren en na het beluisteren van de tien tracks zou dat best het geval kunnen zijn.

Alles klinkt wel uiterst radiovriendelijk en is mooi afgewerkt, maar de nummers hebben toch een verslavend effect. Deze oorspronkelijk uit Libanon afkomstige muzikant wedt duidelijk op twee paardjes, en wint uiteindelijk nog de race! De helft van het album bestaat uit goed geschreven nummers die je het best kan vergelijken met (tja) wat The Thin White Duke in zijn Space Oddity-periode deed, terwijl andere nummers als shoegazepop klinken. Een Fransman moet natuurlijk eerbied hebben voor het genie van zijn land, de titeltrack Let It Glow klinkt inderdaad verdraaid veel op de psychedelica van Serge Gainsbourgs L’Homme A Tête De Chou. Geen mens die daarover klaagt! Indiepop die nooit buiten de lijntjes gaat, desalniettemin meer dan behoorlijk gedaan!
