This youthful London combo takes its name from a photograph technique invented by the famous Man Ray, and are now delivering their first album in a classic guitar/bass/drum format. After Rayographs had released two self produced singles in November 2008 and July 2009, this eponymous work creates a link between psychedelic rock from the end of the sixties and the post-grunge of the nineties. Sympathetic intercourse between Jefferson Airplane and PJ Harvey or Throwing Muses and decadent blues worthy of a David Lynch movie soundtrack. Rayographs' three young lasses deliver us inspired, often mid-tempo compositions.

Astrud Steenhouder's voice is warm and sensual. She alternates elegantly between whispering, recital and melancholic singing. And when her voice is treated with a light distortion, the overall effect isn't too far off a sort of Portishead in acoustic overdrive. The guitars, played mainly with a natural crunch sound, are seemingly atmospheric. Full of reverb, their sweet arpeggios become violently discordant when the tension builds. The production, credited to John Hannon, is clean and fluid. The addition of xylophone and flute on some tracks adds an overall baroque and experimental touch. No chart topper on this album but ten consistent tracks played by a band which seems to be threatening to leave the alternative scene very soon. In the best possible way.
