Thurisaz release party JH Den Tap Kuurne 3 april

Thurisaz has released a good new album: The Pulse of Mourning. I was curious to see them perform the new songs. Together with some bands from the area, they gave a release party in Kuurne.

Vermillion
Not many people were already in the venue to see this instrumental metal band. The band didn’ t care and played half an hour with full dedication. No singing, but that was not bad because musically they were good and proved that those who weren't there were wrong.

Ithilien
They were dressed up in animal furs. The smoke machine in combination with the bagpipes benefited the Medieval atmosphere at the beginning. Shame that the mixing was poor, althoug I noticed some strong moments. Unbelieveable what this small lad produced with his voice.

Dyscordia
As Always the band attracted a lot of fans. They did a good job. Sometimes they cut an intro, but due to the short time schedule, that was kind of intelligible. The vocals were very good. The overall sound was better during an early gig at De Kreun (especially the drums), but that is a better venue too. A nice show to prepare ourselves for Thurisaz.

Setlist: Rise to Perception, The Loser’s Game, Ache of Hearts, Chtytonic Stars (de nieuwe single and video) , Locked Within, From Sight to Black, Twin Symbiosis en My Devotion.

Thurisaz
In advance I wondered how they would sound live after their acoustic tour. Their new CD has some epic, atmospheric parts and some harder songs. The show started with a sample of “Longin…”, the opening track of their new CD, followed by “For A Change”. The setlist was an alternation between old and new work. It was clearly that they chose for a thougher set. A show that was perfectly fine and shows why they are top in their category.

Setlist: Longin… (sample), For A change, Rays of Light, Point of no Return, Falling, Patterns of Life, My Preciuous Unknown, Switch to Red, One Final Step, Enslaved Dreams (sample), In All Remembrance and to finish Impending Betrayal.

Thurisaz heeft met The Pulse of Mourning een sterk album uit. Ik was dan ook benieuwd om ze met dit nieuw materiaal aan het werk te zien. Samen met enkele streekgebonden bands gaven ze een releaseparty in Kuurne.

Vermilion
De zaal was voor deze opener nog niet volgelopen. Ze lieten het niet aan hun hart komen en gaven een half uur het beste van zichzelf. Instrumentaal, maar de afwezigheid van zang stoort niet echt. De muziek op zich weet zeker te boeien en gaf de laatkomers ongelijk.

Ithilien
Ze waren helemaal in dierenpelsen gehuld. De rookmachine die met de doedelzak aan het begin van de set werd gecombineerd, dreef de middeleeuwse sfeer nog wat op. Jammer genoeg hadden ze wel wat mixproblemen waardoor hun geluid soms letterlijk de mist inging. Toch hier en daar een sterk moment. De zanger heeft een stemgeluid dat je van zo'n jonge tengere knaap niet direct zou verwachten.

Dyscordia
De mannen hadden traditiegetrouw veel volgelingen mee en kweten zich goed van hun taak. Hier en daar werd de intro weggelaten, maar gezien het korte tijdsbestek was dit meer dan logisch. De zang was dik in orde. Het totaalgeluid was onlangs in De Kreun beter (bijv. de drums kwamen daar beter tot hun recht), maar dit was natuurlijk ook een heel andere zaal. Een mooie show die de weg opende voor de hoofdact.

Thurisaz
Vooraf vroeg ik mij af hoe ze te werk zouden gaan na hun voorgaande acoustic tour en DVD. Hun nieuwe album heeft epische stukken en hardere nummers. Het optreden startte met een sample van de openingstrack uit hun nieuw album: Longing… gevolgd door …For A Change. Nieuw werk dat werd afgewisseld met ouder werk. Het was duidelijk dat ze kozen voor een snedige en harde set. Een optreden dat dik in orde was en toont dat ze top zijn in hun genre.
