Those who fancy quirky music, know that Crammed Discs is the rightly label for artists who are just a tad different from the rest, and thus it is the ideal place for the musical centipede Maia Vidal and her third album You're The Waves .

This American lady has lived everywhere (Montreal, Paris, Barcelona, you name it!) and she was involved in the most diverse music projects you can think of, but as a solo artist, she apparently has found her own definitive way. You should actually take the word solo very literally, because almost all instruments are played by Maia herself (and produced the album too), even though Giuliano Cobelli (both on stage and on this disc) is always at her side.

It is a shame to link the fragile (sometimes schizophrenic) pop songs of Maia with other artists, but if you force us to do so, then You're The Waves might sound like a cross-pollination between Cat Power (the character) and Lily Allen (the pop factor). At firtst lsiten, the tracks might seem quite simple, but the claws are sharp and can leave deep wounds. A superb album that should be in your collection.

Wie zin heeft in eigenzinnige pop, kan altijd bij Crammed Discs terecht, het label dat al jarenlang een thuishaven is voor artiesten is die net een tikkeltje anders zijn dan de rest, en dat is dus ook de ideale plek voor muzikale duizendpoot Maïa Vidal die met You’re The Waves haar derde plaat aflevert.

Deze Amerikaanse dame heeft zo wat overal gewoond (Montreal, Parijs, Barcelona…) en ze was ook bij de meest diverse muziekprojecten betrokken. Als soloartieste heeft ze blijkbaar toch haar eigen definitieve weg gevonden. 'Solo' moet je trouwens zeer letterlijk nemen, want zowat alle instrumenten worden door Maïa zelf bespeeld (alsook de productie van het album), ook al staat Giuliano Cobelli (zowel op het podium als op dit schijfje) altijd aan haar zijde.

Het is zonde om de fragiele popliedjes van Maïa te linken aan andere artiesten, maar als het toch moet, dan zal You’re The Waves wellicht klinken als een kruisbestuiving tussen Cat Power (het karakter) en Lily Allen (de pop). De nummertjes hebben een hoog popgehalte, maar de klauwen ervan zijn haarscherp en kunnen diepe wonden achterlaten. Een schitterende plaat die in je collectie moet.
