Atom Egoyan is not the kind of name you see in tabloids, but this Canadian filmmaker can proudly claim that he’s already been 6 (!) times nominated for a Golden Palm in Cannes. That also happened this year. Egoyan really seems to have a bound with the subject of abused children as it already was featured in both The Sweet Hereafter and Felicia’s Journey, and now in The Captive too.

There are elements from Hitchock, De Palma and even Fincher involved in The Captive, but at the end of the day his newest offering stays a typical Egoyan-product. The story deals about a girl who’s kidnapped in South-Ontario and obeys the orders from her torturer. The story is cut in pieces and Egoyan mixes all times. This concept is definitely not that easy for the viewer to follow, but by working so, you are focused on details that seem to be very important for the whole story. As usual Egoyan had a cast of stars. Ryan Reynolds proves as the desperate father that he’s a quite good actor and Rosario Dawson is fantastic as always. The best part however is for Kevin Durand (famous from the two Jackman-debacles Real Steel and Wolverine) who stars as a disturbed psychopath. From now on the main theme from Mozart’s The Magic Flute will sound quite differently!

Because of its complex structure, The Captive is certainly not a movie that is easy to digest. That will also be the main reason why the audience won’t fall for this. Those who are having the courage to start this puzzle are right however, as this is one of the best thrillers you’ll see the forthcoming months. The Captive will be released in theatres this November.

Atom Egoyan is misschien niet meteen de bekendste naam, maar de Canadees is in zijn carrière ondertussen wel al zes keer genomineerd geweest voor een Gouden Palm in Cannes. Dat was ook zo dit met jaar met zijn nieuwste spruit. Egoyan heeft blijkbaar iets met verdwenen kinderen, want dat was dat eerder al het onderwerp in The Sweet Hereafter of Felicia’s Journey, en dus nu ook met The Captive.

Ofschoon er wel wat elementen van Hitchock, De Palma en zelfs Fincher in The Captive verwerkt zitten blijft de film toch een typisch Egoyan-product. Het verhaal van een gekidnapt meisje dat zich in Zuid-Ontario afspeelt wordt door de regisseur volledig in verschillende tijdspannes uiteen getrokken. Dat zorgt natuurlijk eerst voor de nodige verwarring bij de kijker, maar hoe langer de tijd loopt des te duidelijker de betekenis van eerdere (op het eerste gezicht onbeduidende) details worden. Zoals steeds kon Egoyan nu ook weer op een bekende cast rekenen. Ryan Reynolds bewijst als getormenteerde vader dat hij wel degelijk kan acteren en Rosario Dawson is zoals altijd ronduit fantastisch. De hoofdprijs in deze noir-thriller gaat evenwel naar Kevin Durand (bekend van de twee Jackman-vehikels Real Steel en Wolverine) die als gestoorde psychopaat bijna Hannibal Lecter een poepje laat ruiken.

The Captive is wegens zijn complexe structuur zeker geen gemakkelijke brok. Dat zal waarschijnlijk ook de reden zijn waarom deze prent niet bij het grote publiek zal aanslaan. Wie wel de moed vindt om aan de puzzel te beginnen heeft meer dan groot gelijk, want The Captive is zonder twijfel één van de betere thrillers van dit moment. De film komt in november in gewone roulatie.
