Thanks to Downtown Abbey costume dramas are back, and so television stations wants such series in their catalogue. Channel 4 has Indian Summers, which is based on the famous book by John Wright. One of the attractions of this series is Julie Walters, the celebrated British actress who you perhaps remember from Educating Rita.

The eight episodes are set in Simla, near the Himalayas, an area with numerous tea estates. Through a lot of (often romantic) intrigues the makers try to create a picture of the relationship between Britain and India during the 30s. In 1932, the country dreamed of independence, but the British had no intention to give up their their dominanceso easily. A lot of places in India were made by the English as their own England, the town of Simla is such an example.

Opinions are sharply divided about Indian Summers, but from the beginning it is clear that the makers are targeting an older audience. The series is very slow (even too slow), so many viewers might find it an awful long ride. The performances are good, but also very classic and that is no plus for the current generation. All that remains are the majestic scenes in which this story takes place. The key question is whether this is enough for some viewers. Probably not, merely fodder for fans who want their series very classic!

Dankzij Downtown Abbey zijn kostuumdrama’s weer helemaal in, en dus wil iedere zender wel zo’n serie in zijn catalogus. Channel 4 koos voor Indian Summers, dat gebaseerd is op het beroemde boek van John Wright. Een van de trekpleisters van deze serie is Julie Walters, de gevierde Britse actrice die je je misschien nog herinnert uit Educating Rita.

De 8 episodes spelen zich in Simla af, vlakbij het Himalaya-gebergte waar zich ook talrijke theeplantages bevinden. Door middel van een heleboel (vaak romantische intriges) probeert de serie een beeld te scheppen van de relaties tussen Groot-Brittannië en India tijdens de jaren 30. In 1932 droomde het land luidop van onafhankelijkheid, maar de Britten waren niet van plan om hun machtspositie zo maar op te geven. Heel wat Engelsen hebben van plaatsen in India een eigen Engeland gemaakt, het plaatsje Simla is daar een voorbeeld van.

De meningen zijn sterk verdeeld over Indian Summers, maar vanaf het begin is het duidelijk dat de makers op een ouder publiek mikken. De serie is ontzettend traag (zelfs gewoon te traag), waardoor heel wat kijkers deze serie een ontzettende lange rit zullen vinden. De vertolkingen zijn goed, maar ook enorm klassiek en dat is voor de huidige televisiegeneratie ook al geen pluspunt. Het enige wat overblijft zijn de majestueuze scènes waarin dit verhaal zich afspeelt. De hamvraag is natuurlijk of dit voor sommige kijkers wel genoeg is. Wellicht niet, louter voer voor seriefans die hun reeksen zeer klassiek willen!
