One of the hit series that for HBO is Girls, created by Lena Dunham, who also plays the lead role. The awards are now almost impossible to count (including the Golden Globes) and the public (also outside America) is keen on the adventures of these girls. Especially because of the fact that this series illustrates very well how a young woman feels in a metropolis, it has gathered many fans, including many men. You might think with such a title that Girls is for spoiled teenage girls or feminists, but that's not the case. It is a sitcom (or if you want a romcom ) that is taken from life and miles away from the Manhattan dreams of Sex And The City. So no Barbie dolls, but women with sometimes incorrect sizes (but with character) and especially a lot of problems. Not that everyone likes Dunham. Some say she includes naked scenes to camouflage the weaknesses. Criticism that makes no sense, because Girls is 12 episodes of fun.

Meanwhile, in the US a fourth season is in progress, but in Europe we have the third one, now available in all stores. Helene Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham) is the central figure: a writer who settled in New York and who has become the editor at GQ Magazine. Someone without headaches you would think, but even though her relationship with the freaky Adam (Adam Driver) is OK now, Hannah is still the type of woman that is never satisfied. According to the clichés you are lonely in New York, but luckily Hannah has a horde of friends and it is that club which is followed in Girls. Marnie (Allison Williams) is Hannah's best friend. Last season we saw how Marnie's relationship with Charlie Dattolo broke up. And no, even though she has ended it herself, she is still not over it. Hannah's other girlfriend Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) doesn't have these problems. She finds her studies very important. At least that is what she wants them to be, because the appeal of parties is often greater than the one of books, with all the consequences ! With her roommate Jessa ( Jemima Kirke ) things are even worse as she ends up in a rehab center.

The twelve episodes are so funny (some say simply brutal) that you watch them in one row. Admitted, just as in many American series some characters annoy, but at least they are made of flesh and blood. Sometimes you are shocked because Dunham has no problem to depict her peers as narcissistic and selfish. The third season of this quality series is now out on HBO through Warner.

Een van de paradepaardjes die HBO in zijn stal heeft staan (en dat zijn er ondertussen heel wat) is Girls, een serie die door Lena Dunham is bedacht, die zelf ook de hoofdrol speelt. De prijzen zijn ondertussen bijna niet meer te tellen (waaronder de Golden Globes), en ook het publiek (ook buiten Amerika) lust de avonturen van deze meiden. Vooral het feit dat deze serie zeer goed weergeeft hoe een jonge vrouw zich voelt in een metropool, heeft er voor gezorgd dat Girls heel wat fans vergaart, waaronder ook heel wat mannen. Want neen hoor, je zou het niet meteen denken met zo’n titel, maar Girls is helemaal niet voor bakvisjes, en ook niet feministisch. Een sitcom (of zo je wil een romcom) die uit het leven is gegrepen en die mijlenver van de Manhattan-dromen uit Sex And The City staat. Dus geen afgelikte barbiepoppen, wel vrouwen met soms onjuiste maten (maar met karakter) en vooral zeer veel problemen. Niet dat iedereen dat nu goed vindt, zo bekritiseert men Dunham maar al te graag omdat ze te vaak in haar blootje staat. Kwestie van de zwaktes te camoufleren, weet je wel. Kritiek die geen steek houdt, want Girls is 12 afleveringen genieten.

Ondertussen is men in de VS al aan het vierde seizoen bezig, maar voor het zo ver is hebben wij eerst nog het derde, dat vanaf nu in de winkel ligt. Hannah Helene Horvath (Lena Dunham) is de centrale figuur: een schrijfster die zich in New York heeft gevestigd en het ondertussen tot redactrice bij GQ Magazine heeft geschopt. Iemand zonder kopzorgen zou je denken, maar ook al is haar relatie met de buitenissige Adam (Adam Driver) best OK, toch is Hannah het type vrouw dat nooit gelukkig is. Volgens de clichés ben je alleen in New York, maar gelukkig heeft Hannah een hele horde vriendinnen en het is dat clubje dat in Girls wordt gevolgd. Marnie (Allison Williams) is Hannahs beste vriendin. In het vorige seizoen zagen we hoe Marnie’s relatie met Charlie Dattolo uiteindelijk op de klippen liep. En neen, ook al heeft ze het zelf beëindigd is ze er nog steeds niet bovenop. Hannahs andere vriendin Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) heeft die problemen niet. Zij vindt haar studies het allerbelangrijkste. Ten minste dat wil ze toch, want de aantrekkingskracht van feestjes is vaak groter dan die van studieboeken, met alle gevolgen! Met haar kamergenoot Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is het nog erger gesteld. Met deze harde (vaak brutale) tante gaat het van kwaad naar erger, door haar druggebruik komt ze zelfs in een afkickcentrum terecht.

De twaalf afleveringen zijn zo grappig (volgens sommige gewoonweg brutaal) dat je ze in één ruk uitkijkt. Toegegeven, net zoals dat het geval is in vele Amerikaanse series, durf je je wel eens aan sommige personages te ergeren, maar ze zijn ten minste van vlees en bloed. Mensen waarvan je soms gechoqueerd bent, want Dunham heeft er geen enkel probleem mee om haar leeftijdsgenoten af te schilderen als narcistisch en egoïstisch. Girls is gieren, schuddebuiken, gênant, confronterend... kortom het leven zoals het is (of ten minste het Amerikaanse leven in New York toch.) Het derde seizoen van deze kwaliteitsserie is nu uit op HBO via Warner.
