The New Zealand Hannah Curwood, meanwhile working from London, released her self-titled debut album Hannah in The Wars earlier this year. According to the press release, the new single Only Wanna Be is one of those “beautifully written melodies and emotionally engaging narratives, taking inspiration from life’s trials and triumphs and perfectly showcasing Curwood’s distinctive and powerful vocals”.

Only Wanna Be starts with the fragile sound of a piano, to which Hannah adds her fragile vocals, doubled later and supported by gentle percussion. It is a composition that was written after a failed relationship and Hannah's flight to the other side of the world. As a result there is talk of emotional tension and intimacy, which find their expression in lyrics and melody. But Only Wanna be is no mournful composition. It radiates hope and renewed self-confidence and Hanna's voice sounds strong and vulnerable in the beautiful harmonies.

B-side Sweet Release shows another side of Hannah Curwood’s talent. The song sounds cheerful and thanks to the support of a powerful piano and dark strings, the track grows into a beautiful composition which doesn't have to yield to Only Wanna Be. A melancholic violin is heard in the instrumental passage to paint a powerful background for the fast-paced and compelling melody. A double A-side that meanders between folk and singer-songwriter, and which in our opinion is the perfect teaser for the album.

De Nieuw-Zeelandse Hannah Curwood, ondertussen werkzaam vanuit Londen, bracht eerder dit jaar haar titelloos debuutalbum Hannah in The Wars uit. Daaruit is nu de tweede single Only Wanna Be getrokken, die naadloos aansluit bij wat in de perstekst wordt omschreven als “prachtig geschreven melodieën en emotioneel boeiende verhalen, die hun inspiratie vinden in beproevingen en triomfen uit het leven en die Curwood’s aparte en krachtige zang perfect tot haar recht laten komen".

Only Wanna Be steekt van wal met breekbaar pianogeluid, waaraan Hannah al even breekbare vocalen toevoegt, die even later worden verdubbeld en onderlijnd met voorzichtige percussie. Het is een compositie die werd geschreven na een mislukte relatie en Hannahs vlucht naar de andere kant van de wereld. Er is dus sprake van emotionele spanning en intimiteit die hun uitdrukking vinden in tekst en melodie. Desondanks is Only Wanna be geen treurige compositie, maar straalt ze hoop en herwonnen zelfvertrouwen uit en klinkt Hannahs stem krachtig en tegelijk kwetsbaar in de prachtige harmonieën.

B-side Sweet Release toont een andere kant van Hannah Curwoods talent. De song klinkt opgewekter en mede via de muzikale ondersteuning door een krachtig pianogeluid en donkere strijkers, groeit hij uit tot een prachtige compositie die niet moet onderdoen voor Only Wanna Be. Een melancholische viool neemt de instrumentale tussenpassage voor haar rekening en schildert een krachtig canvas voor de jachtige en overtuigende melodie. Een dubbel A-side die meandert tussen folk en singer-songwriter en die wat ons betreft de perfecte teaser is voor het album.
